Lindenhurst is a south shore village located within the Town of Babylon. Its original European settlers were German and named the town Breslau for their original home in Central Europe. They acquired the land from the Secatogue and Massapequa tribes who gathered food from the heavily wooded area. The first Englishmen to make use of the land were farmers who grew salt hay fpr their livestock. As the region became more heavily settled it grew into a recognized town by 1873, and changed its name to the current Lindenhurst in 1891 for the linden trees native to the area.
Growth has not stopped for the area, however; it currently stands as the fourth largest village in New York State, surpassing nearly two thirds of the State’s 62 cities in population. In order to better serve such a large community, the Lindenhurst Union Free School District employs a total of seven elementary schools which all flow into its large middle and high school. Famous residents of the area include actor Dan Lauria (who played Jack Arnold on The Wonder Years), film director Hal Hartley, game show host Jack Barry, and musician Pat Benatar.
As of the 2010 census, Lindenhurst had a population of 27,253 with 9,316 households and an average of about three persons per home. The median household income was $83,964 with males making $63,824 and females $44,495.
